Byron Center

Byron Center, Michigan is a community in the center of Byron Township and part of Kent County. This village was organized in 1836. It lies about 14 miles southwest of Grand Rapids and covers an area of five square miles. The total population in 2010 was 5,822. A popular community for commuters, it’s a short drive to downtown Grand Rapids, an hour to the state capital Lansing and a 25 minute drive to the airport. 

There is an active community center at the Whistlestop Park. The community center features a modern exercise and fitness center, activity courts, a kitchen facility and several meeting rooms for community organizations. Both Whistlestop and Bicentennial parks have multiple soccer, baseball, softball fields and tennis courts.

Lake Michigan is minutes away, offering waves and deep waters for boating, swimming and skiing. Charming seaside villages feature quaint shops, restaurants and historic attractions.

It’s a leisurely drive to downtown Grand Rapids where an array of cultural and entertainment activities are in constant motion, including the Grand Rapids Symphony, Opera Grand Rapids, St. Cecilia Music Society and Grand Rapids Ballet. Theater lovers can choose from the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Actor's Theater, Circle Theater, Heritage Theatre Group and Broadway Theater Guild offering every type of show from comedy to drama to musical.

Quality medical care is available at four major medical centers in the greater Grand Rapids area. There is a broad economic base consisting of manufacturing, service and retail sectors expanding the greater Grand Rapids economy. Greater Grand Rapids is an excellent place to start a business and continues its tradition as a noted center for furniture manufacturing with famed makers of office furnishings such as Steelcase, Haworth and Herman Miller calling the area home. Fortune magazine named Grand Rapids the "tenth best city for business in the US" with access to a thriving region of more than a million people.


The Byron Center public school system includes one high school, two middle schools and three elementary schools. The school mascot is the BC Bulldog. Sports are an active part of the school year. Students can find the latest sports news at a dedicated website.
